Once upon a time, there was a rock.
This rock absorbed all of the power from heaven and earth, from the sun and the
moon. One day this rock broke, and within that rock was a stone egg. The stone
egg sat there for days, and then began to hatch. Out of the stone egg hatched a
stone ape. The ape grew stronger and stronger every day. He learned how to walk
and how to climb trees. Now that he had grown big and strong, he wanted to
become ruler of the jungle, so he began training. Everyday he ran twenty miles
and did five hundred push-ups. Although he was made of stone, he still had a
lot of work to do before he could become king of the jungle. To become king of
the jungle, he would have to fight the current king of the jungle, King Kong.
King Kong
had been king of the jungle for over twenty years. He was a mighty ruler, but
his followers started to think ill of King Kong. He has started to make rules
that are very unfair to the rhinos, and he doesn’t listen to what the average
jungle-goer has to say. So the ape from the egg knew that he needed to do
something to take over King Kong. He started to get a following of other apes
to help him train and help him during the battle. King Kong had a following of
his own that would help him defend the throne.

Chatter of
a battle was roaring through the jungle, and there was a lot of excitement in
the air. Everybody wanted the ape that came from the stone egg to be their new
leader. King Kong was not happy about this though, and told all of his followers
to man their battle stations. The ape that came from the stone egg knew it was
time, and would begin battle that night.
The battle
was a long fought one. Both sides fought long and hard, but of course the stone
ape prevailed. He had trained too much to lose. After the battle was the
ceremony in which the jungle-goers officially made the stone ape king of the
jungle. They named him Handsome King of the Apes and Jungle. From here on out
the whole jungle lived happily under this ape.
Author’s Note:
My story that I wrote is based of a story you can find here: Handsome King of the Apes. How the stone ape was formed stays the same, but I did change how he became king of the apes. In the original story, the stone ape finds other apes in the jungle and they tell him if he can jump through to the other side of the waterfall, then he can become king of the apes. He did just that and became king. I thought it would be more fun if there was already an existing king, King Kong, and the stone ape had to overcome that ape to be king of apes. In this story he also wasn't just king of the apes, but king of the jungle too.
The original story can be found here: "The Ape Sun Wu Kung" in The Chinese Fairy Book, ed. by R. Wilhelm and translated by Frederick H. Martens (1921).
Hello again, Steven! I like how you managed to keep the major aspects of the original story, and yet brought in some pop culture references and added a competitor to the challenge the stone ape faced. The image you used adds to the imagery of the story, and the format of the tale is concise and simple but descriptive. Great work! Can’t wait to read more of your stories!
ReplyDeleteSteven, cool story. I was a little nervous when I saw that King Kong was in the story. I have never read a book or watched a movie about King Kong. I do not know why. So, I did not want to miss out on your creativity because I do not have any knowledge of King Kong. Luckily, you wrote your story about something else. It was nice and short, which I like. Great story.
