Extra Reading Diary: Cherokee Myths

The Terrapins Escape from the Wolves: A terrapin and a possum were collecting fruits from a tree and a wolf was stealing the fruits from them. The possum then threw down a bigger one to choke the wolf and it killed him. The terrapin cut off the wolf’s ears to use as spoons. All of the wolves heard the terrapin was using the wolf’s ear as a spoon, so they ganged up on him. They threw him in the river to die but the terrapin survived. I liked this story because it was about a turtle. Turtles are my favorite animals so it was hard for me not to enjoy this.

The Race Between the Crane and the Hummingbird: The humming bird and crane were both in love with the same pretty woman. She said she would marry whoever won in a race because she liked the hummingbird better and though he would win. The crane could fly all night though and ended up winning the race. The woman claimed that she would never marry such an ugly fellow as the crane so she stayed single. I like this story because it is similar to real life. There are a lot of times that people don’t live up to their word. Even though the crane won fair and square, the woman didn’t marry him.

The Huhu gets Married: A strange man came up and married a random woman because her mother said they needed a man to do work to make it by. I thought this was a very odd beginning to the story, but I guess that is how it was back in the day. He didn’t do work like he had promised, and so the old woman told him to leave. This story was very pointless I thought. There wasn’t much of a story line and it wasn’t even interesting. I thought this was the worst story in the unit personally.
