Reading Diary A: Cherokee Myths

The Journey to the Sunrise: This was probably my favorite story in the whole unit. I really enjoyed the writing style of the story. It is about some young men who decided to figure out where the sun lived. They traveled and met many different tribes. Some of these tribes they had heard of, some they had never heard of.  They found out the sun just came out of a door. One of the men tried to go through the door but died doing so. They turned around and went home. When they got home they had been gone so long that they were old men. I liked this story but it almost seemed pointless. They spent their whole lives traveling to see where the sun came from, and it wasn’t even anything interesting.

Origin of the Pleiades and the Pine: The boys liked playing a game so much and their mothers told them not to play it. To attempt to make them stop, they cooked them stone for dinner one night.  They hoped to go away somewhere that they wouldn’t trouble their parents anymore.  Six of the boys floated off into the sky and became Pleiades, and one went under the ground because the mother tried to save him, and was turned into a Pine. I thought this was a really cool story and very interesting. It had a good ending.

The Deluge: This is about a dog that went down to the river every day and howled. The owner of the dog scolded him but the dog told him that a flood was coming and he needed to build a raft, and throw the dog into the water. The man did this and everyone else but him died. He one day heard voices and went to go see what it was, but all he found was bones. He knew it was the ghosts singing and dancing. I really enjoyed this story because it was about ghosts. I always like ghost stories and Cherokee stories.
