Introduction: Steven Grim

Hello All,

My name is Steven Charles Grim. I am a senior in the Energy Management program here at the University of Oklahoma. Both of my parents went to the University of Oklahoma, so I always knew that is where I wanted to go. I started out as an Aerospace Engineering major here at OU, but after two years in the major, I decided that it was not the right major for me. I will go ahead and say that it was the greatest decision I have ever made. I am enjoying my new major one thousand percent more than I did my old major. I have lived in many different states in my life. I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I only lived there for less than a year, so I don’t remember much about it. I then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in which I lived for five years. One of my favorite memories about living in New Mexico was going to the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque. It is one of the biggest hot air balloon festivals in the world! As a child, I really enjoyed going to that. After that, I lived in Phoenix, Arizona for a couple of years, and then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where I still currently reside. I have many hobbies, which include duck hunting, fishing, and golfing.  I look forward to my final semester here at the University of Oklahoma. In my final semester, I am enrolled in fifteen credit hours. The classes I am enrolled in are as following: Mythology and Folklore, Negotiation, Law of Commercial Transactions, Climate and Renewable Energy, and Business Strategy and Policy. I am looking forward to each and every one of these classes for different reasons. Thanks for taking time to read a little bit about me, and I look forward to getting to know a little bit about each one of you.

  1. I have been to a balloon festival at least once in my life but I was really young. I just remember how ridiculously huge they were on the ground and I was in awe about it for some reason, lol. I also have always wanted to try hunting but I really would like to hunt with a bow and arrow. They might be more tricky than a gun but it just seems like a lot fun.

    1. I think hunting with a bow and arrow is much harder than just hunting with a gun. It takes a little more skill, and you have to be a lot closer to whatever you're hunting. Thanks for commenting!

  2. Dude, the balloon festival looks amazing! Did you ever ride in one? I suppose it would be slightly terrifying if things went wrong, though. Regarding your hobbies, it's great that you play golf! Have you ever played Southern Hills in Tulsa? I visited that CC to watch the PGA Championship a few years ago, and it was incredible. I'm sure you're ready to graduate by now! I've never heard of the course you mentioned called "Negotiation;" it conjures images of either peaceful discussions or lots of paperwork, to me. Looking forward to a great semester!

    1. Balloon festival was a lot of fun! Never got the chance to ride in one though... But I sat in one while it was on the ground! Never played Southern Hills, but would love to! You kind of have to know someone to be able to play there. Negotiation is a class that will teach about many different methods to negotiate. Whether it is for buying a new car, negotiating your salary, or anything else in life you might have to negotiate for. Thanks for commenting!

  3. Ooh! The Balloon Fiesta looks so awesome! I would love to be able to see that in real life. How very very cool. Out of the four places you've lived which has been your favorite? I'm a senior also and have bunch of friends from Tulsa. What high school did you go to?

    1. Of course I like living in Oklahoma, but as far as I remember, I really liked living in Albuquerque. It is hard to pick one favorite though. I went to Union High School. I graduated with over 1000 people! But you never know, we might have some of the same friends!

  4. Oh, I am such a fan of the southwest, Steven: my mother was born in Albuquerque, and we lived for some years in Tucson when I was little, and the landscapes of both Arizona and New Mexico are just captivating to me; I think they are so beautiful! And seeing them from a balloon's-eye-view would be even better: wow! Later on in the semester, there is a unit on Native American tales from the Southwest: you might want to choose that one... so many great stories from that wonderful part of the world! :-)

  5. Wow, looks like you've been all around the country. I bet you have seen some pretty cool sports stadiums. My grandparents live in Jenks, and I love going to visit them. Tulsa is a really cool place. Also, I'm really glad that your major choice seems to be working out for you. I was almost a chemical engineer, but I just couldn't get into some of the stuff, so I went Biochemistry and now am heading for pharmacy school.

  6. Hi Steven, it is nice to meet you. My mom went to OU as well, and just like you OU is always were I wanted to go! I am glad that you are content with changing your major. It can be hard at times to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. It is really interesting that you have lived in many states. I have lived in Oklahoma my entire life. Good luck on your semester! I really enjoyed the picture of the hot air balloons.

  7. You've been all over the place it seems! That picture you added of the hot air balloon festival makes it look like so much fun. I feel like that's something everyone should experience at least once in their life. Congratulations on finding a major you love also! Not everyone can find something to do that they really love, so good for you!

  8. The Balloon Festival in Albuquerque is definitely on my bucket list! I can’t imagine how cool that would be in person, as the pictures are already pretty awesome! I’m sure you’re excited to be in your final semester. I know I am, haha. My best friend is an Energy Management major too, and I didn’t even know that existed at OU before he switched to it! I’m so glad to hear that so many people are enjoying it because it sounds pretty cool.

  9. Hey Steven! The Balloon Fiesta sounds really neat! I bet that would have been a really cool thing to be able to go to. I'm glad you found a major that worked a lot better for you. I am also very familiar with changing majors and finding one that you love just makes school a million times better. Good luck with the rest of your final semester!

  10. Hey Steven,

What a small world, another Union High Schooler in this class. I had no idea you weren't originally from Tulsa so that's cool that you've lived different places. I'll be spending a lot of time in Phoenix this summer so you'll have to tell me about all the fun places I need to checkout while I'm there.

  11. I think it is cool that you continued your family legacy and went to OU. I am glad you are so happy with your decision to switch majors. Better late than never! I have lived in many different states as well. Moving a lot as a kid can be difficult, but I am sure you have made a lot of awesome memories. Hot air balloon festivals are awesome. Although it is probably not nearly as big as the one in Albuquerque, there is one every year where my parents live in Highland Village, Texas. Good luck in your final semester!

  12. Hey, Steven! I know that you have probably gotten this comment a lot, but your name is perfect for this class/topic, haha. I used to love reading Grimm’s fairytales when I was younger. . . I have heard so many awesome things about the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque! I have a friend who lives there and she never misses an opportunity to bring it up—I hope I can attend it sometime in the future! I can’t wait to read more of your blog this semester!

  13. Hey Steven! I completely understand having a major that you are not passionate about. I struggled with the same thing, when I majored in International Business and Marketing. My mother is an alum of The University of Oklahoma so I knew this was home. I did not apply anywhere else. It kind of freaked my mother out. Lol. I have vacationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico! It was so fun and peaceful. I really enjoyed it because my whole family went. I took two grandmothers, a great-grandmother, a great-grandfather, and my step dad and mother. The drive wasn't so great because no one stopped talking. Anyways, congrats on your last semester!

  14. Hi Steven! Congrats on your last semester! I can't believe we are almost done! I find it hard to stay focused at time because I keep thinking about what it will be like once I graduate. And you have lived quite a few places! I am in the same boat where I lived in five different places before 4th grade, when I moved to Memphis with my family. The balloon festival looks awesome! I would love to go at some point.

  15. My roommate went to the festival of balloons when she visited Albuquerque this past year and said she loved it! I’ve been to Albuquerque once, it was for my first ever rugby tournament, I got woman of the tournament and it was an amazing experience so I’ll always remember Albuquerque. I also know how you feel on changing your major for the better! I’m glad you figured it out and are about to graduate with a degree you enjoy! Cheers!

  16. I love that photo from the balloon festival! I've never been to Albuquerque, but i've been to the Plano festival many times. I went to see my friend's dad sky dive into the event before all of the balloons were released. It was really cool! I'm glad you're enjoying your major! I was in a similar boat. Originally I was a psychology major, but sophomore year I switched to social work and i'm so glad I did. I love my major now and feel like i'm really going to get to do a lot with it. Congratulations on being so close to graduation! I can't wait, but I have to admit that it did go by fast. Good luck with the rest of your semester!

  17. Steven- I have never before heard of the Energy Management program. Is that under the college of engineering? I grew up in New Mexico as well, about an hour away from you in Santa Fe. It is one of the prettiest states; I love to go back and visit. Just last year I went back for the balloon fiesta during fall break. It was so much fun. Good luck on your senior year!

  18. Hi Steven! Your major sounds very interesting! I'm kind of jealous that you've gotten to live in so many different states! I've only ever lived in Oklahoma and I just want to get out and experience something new. I love that picture of the balloon festival! That would definitely be something that I would want to experience. Congrats on graduating soon and good luck with the rest of your semester!

  19. Hi Steven! Congrats on also being in your final semester. It is crazy to think how close graduation is now. I completely understand what you mean about being so much happier after switching majors. It was such a relief to be majoring in something I enjoyed learning about. I honestly can’t say that I have ever seen a hot air balloon in use. A festival sounds like it would be full of a vibrant display of balloons.

  20. When I first read the name of your blog, I thought it might be related to a favorite story of yours within the mythology and folklore collections. Now I know it comes from your last name! I am also a senior, but neither one of my parents when to the University of Oklahoma. I have only lived in Texas and Oklahoma, unlike your journey-filled life!

  21. Well how interesting! I'm jealous that you have had the opportunity to live in a number of states. I was born in Virginia, but have lived in Oklahoma for as long as I can remember. I've always wanted to branch out and see what the rest of the world is all about. Your major is also intriguing. I was an environmental sustainability major for a bit. I hope you enjoy Climate and Renewable Energy!

  22. It's great that you figured out what major worked best for you. I say that because I see lots of people get stuck in a rut about their major choice 1) because they can't decide, or 2) they feel like they're obliged to take on a specific major whether they like it or not. Also, the importance of energy management will definitely be on the rise in the next couple of decades, so I'm glad to know that people like you are taking interest in it!

  23. Hey Steven! I love your picture of the hot air ballon festival! It looks so fun and beautiful! It's really cool that you've lived a few places in the United States. I've lived on the coast most of my life and have really enjoyed seeing the different landscapes of the states. I hope your semester is going well!
